"Priming" is the idea that the words you read can change the way you act. And yes, there are papers that show an effect: but we also need to talk about the Replication Crisis. MORE LANGUAGE FILES: mnclip.info/playlist/PL96C35uN7xGLDEnHuhD7CTZES3KXFnwm0

There's two types of influence - a genuine lasting one and a superficial transient one; there's saying you're more motivated after the experiment and there's being more motivated the next day. Idk how anything was measured or what was said about it in the studies, but it seems worth pointing out here.

Why does it feel like 80% of all studies put out are impossible to replicate? Seems like all papers should have a big asterisk next to them until they're independently replicated

Posting before playing the video: YES. Now, to watch the video. EDIT: So, this was not at all what I expected it to be. I expected it to be about much larger-scale things like "how reading news stories about negative subjects will influence your brain" kind of things. Sort of like This Video Will Make You Angry by CGP Grey.

If you ever learn a foreign language by immersion, you realize quickly that our understanding of audible language is based at least as much on what we expect to hear, as what we actually hear. A lot of audible language is inaudible, but worked out by our brains anyway.

General rule of thumb: If a psychology paper makes a big general claim that isn't completely obvious, it is wrong. Although the media reporting of papers is usually worse about generalizing and claiming a strong effect than the actual papers.
