the reason why this works on car windows has to do with the glass as much of with the ceramic. The reason the car window explodes is because it's tempered glass. there a huge ammount of tension stored in the material and when a very concentrated force breaks just a tiny bit of the glass, it starts a chain reaction. same principle as the prince rupert drop.
